Our Innovation Imperative: Strategic Investment In Arts Education in Ohio
By Gloria Ferris, Community Activist and Director, I-Open

Hi, I’m Gloria Ferris, a Director of I-Open and a community activist, a former teacher of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District and a concerned citizen for the arts in Ohio.

Arts education in Ohio has just had a blow. Recently, the Ohio State Board of Education agreed to allow art, music and drama to become an ancillary offering by our public school system.

  • Record a video for I-Open: WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT ARTS EDUCATION IN OHIO?
Artists, business people and community arts centers have a real opportunity to take over and continue arts education for Ohio’s youth.
My concern, as is the other people that teach art, we are going to have, soon, a group of children who will grow up not knowing how to sing in harmony, how to make a photo or painting with perspective, and will lose their ability to act on stage, give speeches, declamation and debate in their schools so that they will know as adults what it means to appreciate the arts.

This could be a time where Ohio becomes very unattractive as a place to live.
But instead, it could be a great time for the Ohio Arts Council and like organizations to partner with community arts organizations who can pull in individual artists who have their own businesses or would like to have a business. And they could consult, teach, and interact with Ohio’s youth.

This is a time of great change: the dwindling dollars when we are all looking for that same pot of money to teach the arts. It will be a good time to learn how to collaborate and share our knowledge so that our youth in Ohio will still have a great appreciation for the arts.
What do you think? What is your experience with arts in education? What works? What experiences would you like to share here with all of us?

Good explanation of why we are trying to engage OAC in a strategic initiative to create opportunities for artists in Ohio!
