Ripples

3/2/2014

Most of us have observed drops of water falling into a larger body of water.

Raindrops into puddles, or on a pond or lake.

Maybe you've tossed a few pebbles or rocks out into the pond, and watched the circular waves ripple and radiate away from the spot where the pebble hit the water.

If we took several pebbles in hand and tossed them together, the patterns of the waves would collide and move on in new ways.

In this video, we see random slow drips into the surface of some body of water.  In fact, this is a kinetic sculpture, with water randomly dropping off of a series of suspended metal wings, above a small shallow pool.

  • What if we were drops of water in this system?
  • Do we always know how things work that affect us?
  • Can we reach a new point of view that will reveal the underlying patterns of behavior?
  • What limits our understanding, or our ability to change the system?

And finally, Does the seemingly random pattern of droplets have enough order, for us to anticipate them, and act accordingly?
